In the early 1970's the Southern Pacific, L&N, and Seaboard
Coast Line started a pool train from Jacksonville to New Orleans and beyond.
One of the first things I remember about this train was that L&N train #400
would always carry at least 2 sets of pig flats on the rear of the train.
These flats with the L&N's loaded cars to be taken off the rear of the train and
then spotted at the Pensacola intermodal ramp. These were priority cars so they
were off loaded and then moved to the grocery store "Pantry Pride". They
usually arrived at the store before 10am each morning. Sometimes the pigs
had to be turned on the wye because the ramp at Pensacola could only unload pigs
/ trailers from one direction. - J. Larry Seale photo and information
Back when railroad business was booming in Pensacola, the
L&N 7:30 am yard job would either pull (as shown) or push their train to
downtown Pensacola. Besides interchanging with the Frisco and switching
the Port of Pensacola, there were a large number of small industries that were
switched by the L&N's yard jobs. - J. Larry Seale photo and information
